Understanding and Thinking about Ornamental Rice

Abstract:

In this review, ornamental rice was given a new definition and endowed with a new connotation. In addition, the differences of ornamental rice and ordinary rice in terms of planting purpose, agronomic traits, and application ways, as well as the advantages as horticultural flowers were expounded. Moreover, the ornamental values of ornamental rice were also analyzed from the static characteristics, dynamic characteristics, and the combinations and color collocation of ornamental points. Furthermore, the research and application status of ornamental rice was briefly described in this paper. Given that the shortage of germplasm resources of ornamental rice, insufficient germplasm innovation, unsystematic research contents, lack of the evaluation system of ornamental rice, and single application approach, we should strengthen the collection, evaluation, and protection of ornamental rice resources, intensify the innovation germplasm resources, improve the methods of variety identification, accelerate the researches on cultivation techniques and color change mechanisms, formulate a scientific evaluation system of ornamental value, tap the potential of ornamental rice, and expand the application approaches.
