Effects of Different Harvest Time and Harvesting Methods on Yield and Quality of Foxtail Millet

Abstract:

To investigate the effects of harvest time and method on the yield and quality of foxtail millet, the varieties Changsheng 13 and Jingu 21 were used in a split zone design. The treatments included three harvest times (dough stage, maturity and full maturity) and three harvest methods: threshing after cutting and drying plants (DGT), threshing after cutting and drying (QGT), and ear-cutting, direct threshing, then drying (QZT). The yield and quality indicators of foxtail millet were measured. The results showed that harvesting time has a significant impact on the yield and quality of foxtail millet. With the extension of harvesting time, both yield and rice color showed an upward trend, the lowest dough stage; Under different harvesting methods, the yield of QZT treatment was higher than DGT and QGT treatments. The crude protein content of Jingu 21 and Changsheng 13 was highest in the dough stage and full maturity, and slightly lower in maturity. Under different harvesting methods during the ripening period, the crude protein content of Jingu 21 was higher than that of Changsheng 13, reaching a maximum of 12.1%. The cooking quality and appearance quality of millet were influenced by the harvest period, and the appearance qualities of Changsheng 13 and Jingu 21 were different, indicating a significant relationship between appearance quality and variety. Taking all factors into consideration, the most suitable harvesting practice for foxtail millet in this experiment was panicle-cutting, direct threshing, then drying during the full maturity.
