Evaluation of Resistance of Corn Varieties to Southern Corn Rust from Different Regions

Abstract:

The resistance of corn varieties to southern corn rust in different regions of China was studied. This study evaluated the resistance of 85 corn varieties to Puccinia polysora from Sanya of Hainan, Heyuan of Guangdong, Hechi of Guangxi and Shaodong of Hunan. The results showed that the same variety had different resistance to southern corn rust from different regions. The comprehensive evaluation of resistance showed that nine varieties, including Yuyan 505, Luning 184, Liyu 88, Taipingyang 99 and Lühai 200 had high resistance to southern corn rust; 19 varieties, including Youdi 598, Sanbei 63, Lianchuang 839 and Guanyu 911, had moderate resistance to southern corn rust; 17 varieties, including Hexin 9, Deyu M8, Ningyu 502, Xinyu 27 and Chenqiang 808 were high susceptibility. The ratio of corn varieties with high resistance, middle resistance and susceptibility to southern corn rust were 10.59%, 22.35%, and 67.06%, respectively. The resistance of corn varieties in China to southern corn rust was insufficient. It is likely to occur the epidemic of diseases, and precautions should be taken against it.
