Effects of Salt Stress on Seed Germination and Physiological Characteristics of Apocynum venetum

Abstract:

The effects of different salt levels [0 (CK), 100, 200, 300 and 400mmol/L NaCl] on physiological characteristics of seed germination of Apocynum venetum were investigated, taking Apocynum venetum seed from Bameng, Baotou, Tongliao, regions, in Inner Mongolia as test material. Salt resistance was comprehensively evaluated with salt damage index, salt damage level and subordinative function at this stage to investigate the response of varieties to salt stress. The results showed: The seed germination rate, germination index and vigor index were all significantly reduced when the salt concentration was in 0-400mmol/L NaCl; the content of malondialdehyde (MDA)in Bameng, Baotou and Tongliao areas showed a upward trend with the increase of salt concentration. However, the contents of supemxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), proline (Pro) and soluble sugar of all three regions showed a upward trend at first and downward trend later with the increase of salt concentration evenly. At the same time, NaCl concentration less than 200mmol/L had a little influence on seed germination of Apocynum venetum. Salt resistance of Apocynum venetum seeds from 3 areas were evaluated by salt damage index, salt damage level and adapting subordinate function method in Fuzzy Mathematics. Ability of salt-resistance was: Bameng Apocynum venetum > Baotou Apocynum venetum > Tongliao Apocynum venetum.
